Studying alone can be challenging for various reasons, including staying motivated and focused.
As a self-taught UX/UI designer, I've experienced these struggles myself, and I wanted to help other self-studying students to effectively reach their goals without giving up. These thoughts led me to this question :
To gain a deeper understanding of our potential users, I interviewed 5 individuals aged 20 ~28, who are currently working on their studies.
The goal of this interview was to learn about their study habits, how they plan their work, and the challenges they face when studying alone. As a result, I was able to identify 3 main pain points.
Creating user journey map allowed me to identify areas where users may feel negative emotions while studying alone. This allowed me to pinpoint specific features to improve motivation and concentration, including task tracker, accountability partners, and an open space for questions + feedback.
First, I developed user flows for key tasks users would perform on the app/website. Then, I created wireframes to experiment with different layouts. This process led me to identify 5 essential pages required to effectively address user pain points : Home, Explore, Connect, Chat, and My Profile.
To test the functionality of my prototype, I conducted 2 rounds of usability testing with 8 participants. Based on their feedback, I iterated my designs to enhance accessibility for both mobile + desktop experiences.
Takeaway + Future Steps
Planning is essential.
Creating sitemap and organizing pages + features helped me focus on addressing user pain points and avoid getting sidetracked by less important elements. Also, carefully planning the layouts for different screen sizes saved me a lot of time during design and iteration.
Customizable Homepage
Allowing users to customize their homepage to cater to their different studying styles. (+ Provide more options such as sticky notes, stopwatch, motivational quotes etc.)
Mentorship Program
Establishing an effective mentorship program that makes it easy for students to find mentors would be helpful
Microinteractions
Work on microinteractions to enhance user experience and engagement
