Problem

I've noticed that many peers, including myself, find booking nail appointments quite stressful and time-consuming due to unclear pricing and availability, and the hassle of making phone calls. This sparked the question :

How can I make the nail booking experience more efficient and enjoyable for students and young professionals?

Design Solutions

User Survey

To get the general idea of user pain points and needs, I surveyed 208 students/young professionals about their nail booking experiences. Here are the 2 key insights:

User Interview

To dive deeper into the matter, I interviewed 5 regular nail clients aged 20-35 to identify patterns in how they search for and book nail appointments. Here are the 3 main user needs I uncovered:

Competitive
Analysis

With the above insights in mind, I analyzed 4 popular beauty booking apps. While most offered a seamless booking experience (+), they failed to provide any nail design inspiration (-). This became my opportunity for a solution.

Early Designs

After brainstorming with Crazy 8’s method, I came up with some engaging design ideas, especially for the nail inspiration page; personalized feeds based on user’s preferences and search pattern.

Then, I created paper & digital wireframes and low-fidelity prototypes that focused on 3 main user flows; searching for salons, booking appointments, and seeking nail inspiration.

Testing + Iterations

To validate my design, I’ve conducted 2 rounds of usability testing with 10 participants. Based on their honest feedback, I iterated my design continuously over the span of 2 weeks - with 3 major improvements :

WHAT I LEARNED

  • Less is more.

Initially, I was very ambitious and tried adding as many features as I could to make my product “unique”. However, during usability testing, I learned that too many features can cause cognitive overload for users. So I removed all the unnecessary features and made sure every aspect of the app was designed with intention. This cutting down process was difficult but led to a much cleaner design overall.

  • Planning is everything.

Creating sitemap and organizing pages + features helped me focus on addressing user pain points and avoid getting sidetracked by less important elements. Also, carefully planning the layouts for different screen sizes saved me a lot of time during design and iterations.

  • Always consider the purpose behind each design decision.

Besides the interviews and testing, I asked 3 other designer friends to look over my project and they challenged all of my design decisions, making sure there was valid support behind everything. This practice helped me learn to design with more purpose.

  • Done is better than perfect.

Looking back, I think I was too cautious with designing hi-fi mockups, aiming for “perfection”. Through countless iterations, I learned that testing and iterating designs is more efficient than pursuing initial perfection. Moving forward, I will prioritize testing and iteration to improve future designs effectively.
